|Theatricks Theatre Co.||All About Acting||These fun and engaging workshops tailor-made for elementary students encourage active participation and develop and strengthen practical skills in drama in an environment conducive to their discovery and growth. Primary students are introduced to the basic skills of drama and acting by learning about character development, scene creation, and plot development as they explore the elements of dramatic expression. Junior students build upon their drama experience by indulging in their own capacities for creativity as they develop the necessary skills for improvisational acting. By developing skills in improvisation, students increase their self-confidence and teamwork, as well as their ability to express themselves publicly. Professional learning workshops on improv are also available.|
|Central Toronto Youth Services||CTYS Connections||These group-based mental health programs utilize evidence informed approaches such as Mindfulness, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and art based activities to increase resiliency and wellness in the students. Two groups are specifically offered: the first being Connect to Chill (C2C). This group aims to increase affect regulation skills, manage stress and anxiety and build healthy connections with peers, family and community. The second group is an evidence based anger management program called Peaceful Alternative To Tough Situations (PATTS). Participants in this group develop nonviolent conflict resolution skills; increase affect regulation, and strengthen relationships to others.|
|TREC Charitable Foundation||Relay Education: Kids World of Energy||These hands-on workshops provide students with an in-depth exploration of the various types of renewable energy, their uses, and diverse careers in the Green Energy field. Students will use miniature models of wind turbines or solar photovoltaic panels, complete experiments, and build and test prototypes. Workshop titles include: Concentrate on Conservation; Capture the Wind; Plug in the Sun; Digest This!; Solar Workshop; and Green Collar Careers. Additional renewable energy workshops include Wind Design Challenge and Solar Design Challenge where essential building materials are provided for students to design, build and test or race their devices; all challenges include a Teacher Building Guide for teachers to implement if they choose. |
|Warden Woods CCC||Anger Management and Conflict Resolution ||These interactive workshops utilize conflict resolution and mediation techniques as they focus on one or more of the following themes, as requested by schools in LC3: I. Anger Management: Anger Defined; The Anger Mountain; Ways People deal with Anger;Dealing with an Angry Person;Positive and Negative Functions of Anger; Communicating while Angry. II. Conflict Resolution: What is Conflict?; The Unmanaged Conflict Cycle; Characteristics of Conflict; How to Handle Conflict?; Understanding Conflict Styles; Communicating through Conflict. III. Communication: Active Listening; How to be a Better Listener?; What are the Roadblocks to Effective Communication? The purpose of these sessions is to provide students with tools that decrease the conflicts among youth that could or have escalated into suspensions or expulsions.
|Corp of Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall||Musical Insights||These motivational assemblies and workshops from professional musicians provide students insight into the world as a professional musician, how to tap into their own unique talents and how music is a strong communication tool. “Collaborations” allows students to collaborate with a mainstage artist to create an original song over two classroom visits. Two assemblies are available: “Rise Up with Liz Lokre” and “Why I seek Discomfort featuring Peter Katz”.|
|Suitcase Theatre||Suitcase Theatre/Arts Outreach and Performances||These musicals and plays inspire and promote positive self-awareness through storytelling, singing, the visual arts and drama. Characters in the plays and the characterization workshops create positive role modelling; encourage self-confidence, kindness and compassion; promote building healthy relationships, resilience and collaboration. They help students understand narrative structure, enhance character development in drama and enrich their vocabulary in the creative development process.|
|Puppetmongers Theatre||Puppet Theatre||These performances and workshops bring puppet theatre to students as a medium to communicate stories, ideas and experiences. Professional artists introduce a diversity of puppetry traditions around the world, demonstrate puppet making techniques and/or perform stories that explore a variety of themes using different puppets and visual effects. Workshops enable students to construct their own puppet and work in small groups to plan and perform plays using their hand-made puppets for each other. Students explore this art from to broaden their perceptions of themselves and their world in a way that is non-threatening and inclusive. |
|Rainbow Songs Inc.||Play and Make Music!||These play-based music workshops for early years students support music development and social skills. Using music as a tool, workshops encourage students to enhance their social development through singing, playing and moving with others. Students learn musical concepts and a repertoire of songs and have an opportunity to express themselves through movement and kinesthetic exploration. Students develop their inquiry through learning about everyday life habits and activities, exploring world music instruments and discovering their own voice and sound. |
|New Heights Climbing Academy Inc.||Wall and Rope Climbing||These sessions are offered within Phys Ed classes to introduce students to rock and rope climbing, using a portable rock-climbing wall and rope structure. Facilitators teach safety, harness use, top ropes, drop swing, prusik knots and ropes, with carefully monitored hands-on practise on the climbing wall and rope structure. Students transition towards more independent, competent skill sets each session for four sessions over a four day period, with the focus remaining on each student reaching their personal best on the climbing and rope equipment. Resources are available to teachers prior to program delivery, as teacher presence and active participation is a requirement.|
|Toronto Hip Hop Cultural Centre||No = Next Opportunity: Empowerment Project||These workshops aim to make positive social connections and build student’s positive self-image and self-esteem through Hip Hop arts. This workshop series touches on the four elements of Hip Hop: BBoying (break dancing), MCing, graffiti and DJing. Each workshop is led by an experienced Hip Hop artist who explores each Hip Hop element using performance, quotes/lyrics and multi-media. Students learn the history of Hip Hop music and culture in a socio-economic and geographical context, make connections between themselves and their communities, and explore current themes and how Hip Hop is used as a form of artistic expression. The focus is less on the artistic skills but more on mentorship from experienced artists as well life skills development. |
|The Canadian Stage Corporation||Canadian Stage in School||These workshops and career talks provide practical skills in theatre and give direction to students interested in pursuing a career in the performing arts. Workshop activities can include: body and vocal warm ups, projection, improv, breathing, acting with intention, acting without speaking, and basic scene study. Career talks are led by an award-winning professional in the industry who gives a practical tour of the theatre industry in Canada, and steps students can take towards a career in the performing arts, be it through post-secondary education, and/or professional auditions. Self-care for artists and safe guides to getting an agent are also highlighted, along with the many resources available to artists in the industry.|
|Water First Education and Training Inc.||GUSH - Water Education Workshops||These workshops explore issues related to water pollution and watersheds. In the Pollution Solutions workshop, students are introduced to the Grassy Narrows community and explore the impact of industrial water contamination on the community over the past 50 years. Students separate mixtures and solutions and investigate the social, environmental and economic issues related to resource extraction. In the Working Watersheds workshop, students are introduced to the Northern Ontario Ring of Fire, a mining project that was discovered in 2007. Students design and create a Northern Ontario that meets the needs of various stakeholders, including three First Nations communities that are most seriously impacted. Using inquiry-based learning, students work in teams to formulate questions, gather and organize, interpret and analyze, evaluate and draw conclusions, and communicate their findings.|
|Lifted By Purpose GiftEd||Lift Yourself||These workshops provide stress management techniques and coping strategies for secondary students and older. Topics include: anger management, grief and resilience, stigma and mental health, trauma and healing, empathy, healthy relationships. Students will use music, spoken word and storytelling to address their challenges and unpack their thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Facilitators help students identify triggers, learn healthy coping skills, and develop strategies to develop meaningful relationships with their peers and increase awareness of resources.|
|Rulentlez Movements||Language in Motion||These workshops support students to express themselves using music and dance. Students learn dance creation, musicality and critical thinking skills, by connecting body language and sound in order to communicate through dance. Games are played during workshops that involve a variety of dance movement to stimulate students’ creativity, art-based activities, and physical exercises mixed with yoga movements to strengthen the body and to correct posture.|
|Thinking Forward||Thinking Forward Leadership Program||Thinking Forward offers character development and leadership training for students, primarily in Model Schools, to help children and youth strengthen their interpersonal and leadership skills, and to challenge them to address social needs. Thinking Forward provides inclusive and equitable learning opportunities that use the arts and leadership development as a platform to help students develop and improve their well-being. Students participate in hands-on, art activities that highlight themes of belonging, diversity, anti-bullying, teamwork, and community. A variety of methods, resources and activities are used including painting, role-playing, designing and building, illustrating, and art exhibits to showcase student work. |York University||Aboriginal People, Identity and Education ||This advanced credit experience includes both university and secondary school courses that provide students with the opportunity to learn from Aboriginal authors, filmmakers, and artists who are telling their own stories. What does it mean to be an Aboriginal/Indigenous person in Canada? What does it mean to be an Aboriginal person living in an urban environment like Toronto? The dual course includes reading books, watching films, and going to art galleries. Students investigate and develop their own responses to questions of identity and Aboriginality. They explore Aboriginal perspectives of "identify", "history", "literature", and "traditions"; and, allows them to develop their own understanding of Aboriginal worldviews. Students register with TDSB Continuing Education for either (NDA3M) Current Aboriginal Issues in Canada or (NDW4M) Issues of Indigenous Peoples in a Global Context.
|Little Rascals Place||Clay/Pottery Workshop||This arts workshop offers students the opportunity to learn and create clay and pottery pieces. This program is especially suited to early years and elementary students to learn about clay and various hand-building techniques to create pinch pots, coil mugs, clay plaques and individual clay pieces. Pieces will be kiln fired and dropped off within three weeks. |
|UPower Inc.||Healthy Resilient Minds Matter||This concert-style assembly features original songs, stories, song-writing, life mapping and painting to reinforce the message of respect and resiliency and mental well-being. Motivational speaker Sara Westbrook shares her “Choice Making Formula” to teach students how to learn to think and act beyond their emotions so they can make character-based choices rather than emotion-based choices. Students develop strategies for positive self-talk and encouragement to build confidence and interpersonal skills. |Lucy Rupert (Blue Ceiling Dance)||Imaginative Body||This dance workshop delves deeper into contemporary dance art form and explores imagination and the body’s movements to enhance students’ creativity and interpretation skills. Facilitator leads students through a series of improvised movements, exercises and tasks to expand the imagination and inspire a new range of movement and expression. Students learn to work with what is accessible within their own bodies, find their personal movement vocabularies, be able to communicate imagery and sensation. Students work individually and in small groups or pairs to construct short movement scores or dances which will be shared with the class. Professional development is available to teachers.|
|UGOT Active Kids||Early Learning Through Dance||This dance workshop introduces early years students to a variety of dance styles. Trained instructors teach easy to follow routines inspired by a variety of styles, musical artists and/or culture. Students explore movement and rhythm and the five elements of dance - body, space, time, energy and relationship. Students work individually and in groups to develop their own creativity and self-expression. Each age-appropriate workshop starts with a five minute warm-up followed by energetic music with group choreography and dance games. |

|West End Phoenix||West End Phoenix Project||This english literacy workshop series provides a guided exploration of the creative writing, design and technical process for publishing a newspaper. Writers/journalists will guide students in the creative process and deepen critical analytical skills on media literacy. The workshop also delves into the aspects that go into creating a paper such as publishing, editorial and layout and how editorial and visual decisions affect the readers’ experience. Workshop series allows students the opportunity to work with professional writers to work on individual writing and graphic design exercises to create a newspaper spread. Professional learning opportunities are available and may be scheduled by the English/Literacy Department.
Student assignments may be selected and published in The West End Phoenix, a published cultural broadsheet devoted to the local communities of Toronto’s West End.
|The Purple Fig||The Little Fig Children's Writing Workshops||This English Literacy writing workshop incorporates individual and group activities to strengthen writing, language, and analytical skills. Some workshops use a narrative, The Hero’s Journey, as a guideline to teach students about story development and encourage them to express themselves to develop their very own story. Other workshops may use the structure of a first person essay narrative to tell the personal story of the student through memoir style writing. For the younger grades, the workshop will consist of creating a story collaboratively and then performing the story in a play-like presentation. During the process students will learn the art of storytelling by establishing the following: Who is the Hero? What does the Hero want? Why can't the hero get what he/she wants? The Facilitator will work with the teacher prior to the first session to establish relevant curriculum related readings and topics for this creative writing workshop.|
|Toronto Inner-City Rugby Foundation||Rugby Professional Learning and Skills Development||This enhanced physical education program provides rugby training, tournament participation, and curriculum resources to students and teachers. Accredited and experienced rugby program staff lead workshops to introduce and further enhance rugby skills. Rugby activities and games for understanding are based on the physical literacy ABC's of agility, balance, coordination and speed. Beginner students are introduced to the sport through a non-contact, safe game called Rookie Rugby. Advanced students or those that have a solid understanding of the fundamentals, further develop core rugby skills such as movement, passing and communication and sport specific training. Teachers receive curriculum resources that contain 8 modules that provide activities on how to implement the program beyond the workshop. Schools that have participated in workshops have the opportunity to attend an international rugby tournament at BMO Field or participate in a flag rugby tournament when available.|
|Samyuktha Sharath Punthambekar ||Indian Classical Dance Bharathanatyam and Indian Folk Dance||This enrichment dance program teaches Indian Dance, Bharathanatyam. Students learn the history, theory, movement, music and dance techniques associated with this 12th century Indian Art Form. Students practice movement based passages, expressions called Abhinaya and basic rhythm concepts. Workshop series is available to expand on dance techniques and merges Bharathanatyam with contemporary movements which culminates in a choreographed dance piece performed by the class.|

|OWLware Ltd.||Accessibility Now||This experiential learning in film production brings the studio experience into the classroom where students are mentored by industry experts to produce a television segment for the program, “Accessibility Now”. Students discuss accessibility issues that are relevant to them, identify disability awareness topics to highlight and, using professional studio equipment, create a short video from pre-production to completion. Students learn various digital disciplines consisting of studio production, hosting, digital editing, podcast development, producing a show and promotion via social media channels. In addition, students learn accessibility issues and compliance solutions. Professional host speaks to the group about daily living with a disability barrier through life experiences, career planning and industry experience.

|Reach Toronto Autism Services for Youth ||Financial Literacy Training for Special Needs||This financial literacy workshop is specifically for MID classes for students to develop transitional life skills. Many interactive tools are used in this activity-based learning environment including videos, discussions, scenarios and hands-on worksheets. This workshop helps students to gain the necessary tools and skills to deal with money matters in life. With the help of the facilitator, students develop a financial plan of action at the end of the workshop series. Topics include money basics, banking and accounts; savings, bill payment and debt; budget basics; and budget review and pitfalls to avoid. |
|Crescendo Financial||A+ Money Grad||This financial literacy workshop series teaches the fundamentals of successful money management. Students will be given 'mock-money' to invest in a variety of scenarios to learn about financial planning, investing and spending. The topics include: "Too cool for school: A review of post-secondary education funding options with pros and cons"; "This is Your Life: An exercise in successful cash flow planning"; "MoneyBall: A lesson in investments and investing"; and "Myth Busters: Busting the myths of perceived financial success".
|DrumFIT Inc.||DrumDAY||This fitness workshop uses drumsticks on fitness balls to produce a fun, fast-paced, high intensity program that combines mental health benefits of drumming with the overall health benefits of physical fitness. This non-competitive workshop combines music, dance, rhythm, movement and drumming. The routines incorporate patterning, Brain Gym activities, polyrhythms, hand-eye coordination, fine motor skill building, and spatial awareness. Students not only learn drumming and dance movements but they increase their strength and endurance. Through the collective drumming, classes can use drumming as a way to build community spirit. |
|Seedling Stories||Hands in the Garden||This food and garden program allows students to get their hands dirty while gardening, growing food, and learning about the natural environment and sustainability. Students learn and explore plant life cycles, biodiversity, composting, garden creatures, measuring and mapping garden beds, people involved in the food system, harvesting and creating simple snacks, and writing poems and creating skits about the garden. Through this hands-on program, students apply concepts they have learned in class in practical and direct ways. With a variety of workshops to choose from, this program is suitable for early years and elementary students and is offered in both French and English. Many of the workshops offered by this program do not require schools to have a garden and are available throughout the school year. Curriculum resources are available to support teachers.|
|Ballet Jorgen||Ballet 101||This free and interactive ballet workshop introduces students to the performing arts and history of classical dance. Students witness high-quality professional dance while also learning the history of ballet, and how dance is used as a storytelling medium. Excerpts from ballets performed by 3-6 professional dancers, inspire, enrich, and connect with students as they learn basic ballet positions, and explore and discover their own unique ways of creatively conveying their emotions through movement and choreography.|
|Dairy Farmers of Ontario||Dairy Education||This free presentation provides students an opportunity to discover a variety of aspects to the dairy industry. Delivered by a trained dairy educator, presentation uses songs, experiments, hands-on props, games, SMART Board activities and videos. Five topics are available which include how cows produce milk, tools and technology and structures unique to dairy farming, how milk is processed into milk and other food products, health benefits and nutrition of milk, and careers in the dairy and agriculture industry. Presentation materials are available in English and French. |
|KiPOW! Canada||KiPOW! Canada Health Initiative ||This free program discusses fundamental aspects of health such as water consumption, healthy eating and maintaining a balanced lifestyle. Delivered by post-secondary students in science, this interactive program uses games and activities to dive into myths about health, preventing illness, and choosing the right foods. Snacks are also provided to model healthy food options. Topics covered include: importance of water, food requirements, reading nutrition labels, macronutrients and micronutrients, serving and portion size, in depth look at food groups, body image, sleep and physical activity. Resources are provided for students to monitor their progress.|
|Jane/Finch Community and Family Centre||Fields to Parks||This free program enhances ecological literacy through a park design project for select elementary schools in Learning Centre 2. Students learn design components of a public space as well as equitable, ecological and sustainable models to address community need. Students identify problems in their local park using a design-thinking process and facilitators guide students to take concrete steps to address the issues and work to a solution. Program entails exploring and documenting the space (photography and sketching), creating surveys for class participation, sketching a prototype of their impact project, and presentation of the impact project to the school community. To help schools build capacity following project completion, facilitators support teachers to expand or modify the program in the second year and have regular check-ins. Teacher resources and lesson plans are available.|
|Epiphany of Dance||Dance and Stay Active||This free workshop explores fundamental dance concepts and choreography in modern dance, hip hop and jazz to selected elementary schools. Students learn the creative process, composition of simple dance phrases and sequences as well as historical context of the dance. Workshops will focus on a particular style for students to learn dance elements, techniques and choreography that is age appropriate. Students will have the opportunity to use movement to express themselves and to learn to communicate feelings and ideas through dance. |
|Puppeteria||The Know Me Project||This hands-on and interactive workshop addresses the value of diversity in society, the importance of tolerance, and the power of sharing and listening to one’s voice/story. A combination of sock puppets and shadow puppetry are used to deliver and reinforce key messages. Students make and use their own sock puppet and develop a sense of “who I am and who we are”. |
|Peach Berserk||Fabric Design and Silkscreen||This hands-on arts workshop introduces students to fabric design and screen printing by up-cycling students’ own clothes. Facilitators teach ways to design a print, fabric design process and the basics of photo emulsion screen printing as well as information on the design and fashion industry. Students create their own designs on paper, transfer their design onto a piece of pre-owned garment to create a small silkscreen product at the end of the workshop. Facilitator assists schools to setup a simple screen print studio for students to continue the learning. |
|U Can Do It !||Woodworking DIY||This hands-on workshop provides students basic building principles while constructing a woodworking project. Students develop their co-ordination, use easy-to-follow plans, practise with hand tools to complete projects such as windmills, paddle boats, tower cranes mechanical butterflies, motion machines and robotic arms. Facilitator provides all equipment, materials and designs and teaches safety rules on proper use of tools (sandpaper, child-sized hammer and nails). Instructions are taught in a step-by-step fashion for early years and elementary students. Workshop is age appropriate and is also offered in French.|
|Techzenik Robotics & Information System||STEMatize Schools||This hands-on workshop provides students with building blocks and materials to create, design, program, build and operate a Robot. Workshop provides access to new technologies and information on how to utilize them. Students solve real world problems through automating a small Robot and programming them to perform simple tasks. Older students use advanced sensors and program blocks to accomplish complex and detailed tasks and sequences. Students also learn effective programming techniques and language, utilize mathematical, problem solving and logical skills to create and code applications.

|Vujade Entertainment Inc.||Creature Shop||This hands-on workshop teaches students motion picture special effect techniques to create their own animatronic creation. Students handle and explore the simple machines that give the illusion that puppets are alive including mechanical pulleys, push-pull rods, gears and gear chains. Students learn different kinds of special effects, comparing computer generated effects to floor effects. Students build their own animatronic creation to participate in a challenge in stacking a pyramid of wooden blocks. After the workshop, students keep their own creations. |
|Cajuca Mas Arts Producers||Carnival Arts||This hands-on workshop tells the history and origins of Caribbean Carnival and teaches techniques of costume creation to students. Facilitators will share African and multicultural influences on the Carnival Arts, explain folklore, tales and stories, and explain the various creations including masks, costumes and characters. Students will identify with their own cultural identity, explore what Carnival means to them and personally interpret what they have learned through design. The workshop series provides an opportunity for students to design and create their own costume which culminates in students performing as the character in their costume and participating in a mini-parade.
|Wushu Project Inc.||Chinese Dragon and Lion Dance||This high-energy and culturally rich dance workshop explores effective team building and communication through Chinese dragon dance and performance. Students learn how to physically manipulate the different segments of the dragon, dragon techniques, drills and dance movement to bring the dragon costume to life. Once the dance routines are learned, students create choreography which culminates in a performance to the school community. Lion dance presentation is also available for Asian History and Chinese Heritage Months and Chinese New Year celebrations.|
|Hands on Exotics Inc.||Amazing Living World of Birds||This highly interactive presentation takes students on an avian tour around the world using a variety of species of birds. By being presented with multiple species of birds up close and personal, students hold, pet, feed and observe the animals' behaviours and traits. Trained facilitators guide students through the inquiry process to come to conclusions themselves about diet and habitat by examining the different beak shapes, toe formations, feathers, colours and size. In addition, students learn about native species of birds including every day good habits they can follow to be good neighbours to our wildlife, how to help with backyard conservation as well as discuss the consequences of being responsible agents to our natural resources. |
|Voice of Purpose||On the Horizon - Spoken Word Poetry for Personal Development||This interactive arts workshop uses creating and performing spoken word poetry to help students explore and unpack their personal identities and purpose within the context of culture, society, and historical legacy. Students gain a deeper understanding of themselves and how their personal experiences connect to larger social issues. Students develop spoken word, creative writing, non-verbal communication techniques and critical analysis process through the creative writing, visual representation and performing of spoken word poems.
This workshop utilizes the Purpose Driven Education (PDE) model, an educational framework, methodology and practice to help learners identify, align with, and develop skills to pursue their True Inner Purpose.

Workshop offers interactive group activities, easy-to-understand visual presentations and discussion on financial topics including the concepts of savings and debt, financial instruments like credit cards, mortgages, RRSP/RESP/TFSA, lines of credit, payday loans, student loans, taxes and bank accounts. Students learn how to be financial leaders, discover who they are when they manage their finances, and to understand how their financial choices impact not only their own lives in the short and long term, but also the world around them. |HOAMLTD||Create Peace||This interactive motivational assembly provides an inspirational anti-bullying message through the use of dramatic arts, Hip Hop and music. Themes of respect, empathy, leadership, and resilience are covered. A band of musicians share personal stories of overcoming challenges while performing original hip hop songs and dramatic skits. Students learn strategies to address bullying, develop effective ways to overcome bullying and foster respect for each other. This assembly also touches on defining one’s own struggles, overcoming them with passion and ultimately finding one’s purpose in life.
|Scarborough Rotary Passport Club||Brush-A-Mania||This interactive presentation delivered to elementary students to promote good oral health every April which is proclaimed Oral Health Month. Dentist Rotarians visit schools to provide information on proper brushing and flossing techniques, good oral hygiene practice, and healthy eating. Students each receive a toothbrush to practise brushing their teeth, answer questions about brushing and have the opportunity to ask questions to the dentist. Students, teachers and parents are also invited to track students daily brushing habits in-class, and at home via an online 'brushtracker'. |
|Raven Nature Education Specialists||Nature Discovery: Mammals, Birds and Bees||This interactive presentation introduces students to mammals, birds and bees, wasps and hornets. Displays, props, pictures and hands-on activities are used to enhance the learning. Each presentation teaches students how to recognize animals' physical features and characteristics, how they communicate. Students will also learn the animals' role in the eco-system an how to care for animals in our environment. At the end of the presentation, students have an opportunity to ask questions and further interact with the props. |
|AboriginalSport&WellnessCouncilofOntario||North American Indigenous Games Presentation ||This interactive presentation provides an overview of the North American Indigenous Games, and highlights Aboriginal/Indigenous athletic achievements and the unique cultural heritage of various Indigenous communities. It also addresses the Truth and Reconciliation Call to Action #88, calling on all levels of government to take action to ensure long-term Indigenous athlete development and growth through continued support for the North American Indigenous Games. The North American Indigenous Games are an opportunity to spark social change and to engage all Canadians in a discussion around reconciliation, through sport. Presentations have been developed for three specific age categories, junior elementary, senior elementary and high school, and can be tailored for individual classrooms or larger assemblies.|
|Living Rhythm||Drumming to Well Being||This interactive rhythm-based workshop explores drumming to increase mental health and well being for students and teachers. Students learn mindfulness strategies and techniques through pulse, breath and visualization, enhanced communication skills including active listening and cooperation with peers, and community building and leadership skills. Using drums and their own bodies and other sounds, this workshop engages different learners. Students and teachers will learn tools and ideas on ways to reduce stress and build connection with their peers to build a safe and positive community. |Humber College||Jazz in the Schools||This interactive workshop and performance opportunity explores the history of jazz music and its connections to music around the world through live jazz performance.
Students learn the evolution of jazz music and its historical connections. The workshop encompasses the many variations of jazz music as it has fused with the rhythms, melodies and timbres of folk music from around the world. During the month of May, students have the opportunity to attend a jazz concert with musicians at Humber College. Professional development opportunities are available to build on techniques and strategies in working with student music ensembles.
|Visions in Green||Living Legacies of STEM||This interactive, multimedia exhibit and workshop teaches students about STEM pioneers, trailblazers, innovators and inventors from North America and the African Diaspora, with a particular focus on ancient Africa and continental African people and how they have shaped these fields of science to what they are today. The facilitator will deliver history about the people that played a significant role in STEM fields while students interact with exhibited artifacts. List of topics include: "It’s All About That STEM Life & You", "The Giants and Living Legacy of STEM: Untold Stories of African Men & Women", "How STEM has Changed Our Lives" and International Childrens Inventors Museum. |No. 9 ||Imagining My Sustainable City||This interdisciplinary program enhances ecological literacy through an architecture and urban design project for grade 7 & 8 classes. Students walk through their community to observe, discuss, and document (using photography and sketching) the way the community functions. Students learn about infrastructure and design components of their communities: public art, transportation, waste and water management, building types, green spaces, and energy use. They discuss sustainability issues and develop ecologically sustainable models to address these issues in their community. 3D models of their community are built to scale using a variety of construction materials including those found materials. The culminating event is a student exhibit and/or Art installation, organized to showcase the students' work on Imagining a Sustainable City. In this project are curriculum connections to visual art, science, math, engineering, geography, language arts and media studies. |

Music and dance, informed by socio-political and popular historical events and figures, create a rich learning environment with content that connects to the youth’s experiences. |Sage Tyrtle Storyteller||Learning To Tell Compelling Stories||This literacy workshop focuses on finding each student’s personal storytelling voice. The storyteller discusses storytelling structure, elements to engage the audience, character development, and most importantly: making every single word count. Workshop weaves interactive games, exercises and personal storytelling together. Students learn how to create, write and perform personal stories. By sharing personal experiences with a variety of different people, students will foster mutual understandings about each other’s lives.|
|Leave Out Violence (L.O.V.E.)||Engaging New Alternatives||This media arts workshop responds to pertinent issues youth are currently experiencing in their life space, creating dialogue, fostering resilience, and harnessing personal agency. Students use photography, journalism, facilitated discussions and creative writing to access creative outlets in discussing difficult subjects and sharing their unique voices. In addition, students learn valuable media-based skills like photography, editing, videography and digital storytelling culminating in a media product. These creative works are then presented at a community showcase where students share what they’ve learned and educate the broader community on issues important to today’s youth. Weiss Comics)||Gary's Global Heroes Battle Bullying Comic||This media literacy workshop introduces the use of a comic book as storytelling art form using messaging on bullying and diversity and inclusion issues. The comic characters show real life examples and stories of bullying and prejudice. |From Far & Wide||We Are The North||This musical theatre performance within a newcomer story-line touches on the themes of respect, inclusion, diversity and collaboration. This performance uses original songs, drama and music to describe the story of newcomer and how the student overcomes struggles and challenges. Characters will provide positive role modelling, encourage self-confidence and self-worth, and show how students can reach out for help and work together to resolve conflicts. Professional songwriters perform original songs that students can sing along to. A follow-up parent presentation is available. |
|Flashpoint Training Inc.||Fusion Training Experience||This one day career exploration program enables students to gain transferable skills and knowledge in variety of economic sectors. Schools choose the industry sector and Flashpoint will provide a contextual experience with dynamic industry partners. It builds on the Sister School Network, originally established in TDSB by the University of Toronto, OISE. |One Little Goat Theatre Company||PLAY: A (Mini) History of Theatre for Kids||This performance provides a short history of theatre and plays from around the world. Two actors use children’s games, drama, storytelling, music, and dance and to take students on a theatrical journey through four different periods of drama: early beginnings with prehistoric games around the fire, ancient Greek Tragedy, Japanese Noah Theatre and Modern Theatre. Following the presentation a question and answer period allows students to engage a conversation with artists. A follow-up learning resource is available for teachers to continue the learning afterwards. This is an entertaining presentation that honours the natural playfulness of childhood and provides students with an introduction to theatre. |
|Nexim International Development Org||Suubi (Hope) Music Dance and Cultural Exchange Performances ||This performing arts presentation from Uganda tours the world annually, and visits Toronto for a limited period of time each year. The Suubi (Hope) fusion dance troupe's performance is followed by a presentation on the history of Ugandan culture and various traditions of its many tribes. The performance fee contributes to the troupe's work in Uganda to increase access to a high school education for Ugandan students of limited means in a country with no public education system.
|Ontario Ball Hockey Federation||Ball Hockey Professional Learning and Skills Development||This physical education program provides ball hockey training, tournament participation, and curriculum resources to students and teachers. Workshops are led by experienced ball hockey players to introduce the sport by teaching rule structure, player safety and skill development rather than competition. Activities include drills, games and fitness movement. This workshop is deal for those schools who have minimal exposure to hockey/ball hockey. Professional learning is available to staff to deepen their understanding of the sport.|
|Steve Chapelle Communications||Social Media Behaviour Education||This presentation offers training to students on how to minimize internet risks and explore four core subjects: cyberbullying, personal information, inappropriate messages and protection. Students will learn to minimize and maintain their privacy in the on-line world. Presentation is also available to parents through school councils.
|StopGap Foundation||Accessibility & Inclusion: Building Awareness||This presentation raises awareness about physical disability, accessibility and inclusion. Luke Anderson shares how one moment in time changes his life forever and how he finds himself living in a world not well designed for someone in a wheelchair. He explains his personal experiences, challenges he faces and how he overcomes. Students learn about barriers that people with disabilities may face, the importance of a barrier-free and inclusive community, as well as empowering language when referring to people with disabilities. Resources are available for teachers to implement beyond the presentation.
|East Metro Youth Services||Respect in Schools Everywhere (RISE)||This program at West Hill Collegiate Institute provides students in Grades 9-10 a workshop series to address bullying and develop conflict resolution and leadership skills. RISE program staff address and support issues that young people are facing on a regular basis. Students develop workshop materials on bullying, cyber-bullying, mental health and stigma and conflict resolution which are then facilitated to their peers in grades 7-12.
Workshops teach students strategies to communicate and manage bullying and situations where conflict may occur, how to effectively address bullying both as a victim and as a positive bystander. Students also learn coping mechanisms to foster positive mental health and discuss the elements of self-care and have the opportunity to create their own self-care kits. Students receive resources and tools to better advocate for themselves and others.
|Boost Child and Youth Advocacy Centre||Human Trafficking: Supporting Students||This program focuses on providing supports that help students who have experienced human trafficking successfully transition back into school. Boost staff collaborates with TDSB’s Professional Support Services to implement the activities. The program is intended to provide strategies to reduce barriers to success and ensure students have support person(s) within the school and to provide physical and emotional safety to the student. Additional supports include education for school staff on human trafficking as requested, individual support to staff on how to work with victims of human trafficking and education to parent community. |
|Real Talk Learning Experiences||Black History - A Canadian Perspective||This program focuses on the experiences of African people in Canada to share the rarely discussed history of the African diaspora in Canada. The presentation covers a number of interesting topics, including t he success of African interpreters working with early Europeans in first contact with First Nations people, interactions of Black Canadians and Native Canadians in community building, the escape of African people from the southern United States, to their settlement in Nova Scotia, and their experiences in Canada.|
|180 Change Street||180 Change Street||This program identifies and engages youth in a targeted intervention strategy designed to bring about comprehensive change in students. This educational and awareness raising program provides a curriculum that includes one-on-one mentoring, life coaching and training to students that cover topics such as self-awareness, conflict resolution, critical thinking skills and personal and community health. Families are also engaged so they may support students' success.
The program has a history of successfully keeping participants from returning to or staying out of the justice system. Many students have completed their education and graduated or found employment.|
|Hockey Canada||Try Hockey||This program offers an opportunity for students to try hockey, removing barriers to participation, so students enhance team building, confidence, physical health and well-being. Certified coaches deliver the program in the school gymnasium followed by an on-ice event. Students will participate actively and engage in a variety of movement competencies, and demonstrate an understanding of the value of regular physical activity in their daily lives. With follow-up communication, coaches provide further support to maximize sustainability and teacher resources are made available including access to Hockey Canada’s academic lesson plans and 10 week floorball lesson plan.|
|Toronto International Film Festival Inc.||Filmmaking and Media Education||This program offers filmmaking for students and professional development workshops for staff on media literacy and writing, developing and filming a short film. Student workshops comprise of an overview of the filmmaking process that includes: genre and types of films, scene development, script writing, acting and pre-production, filming, editing and post-production. Students have the opportunity to create their own stories, use professional equipment, analyze the impact of film and media on viewers, and learn how to communicate complex ideas to a wide audience. The program culminates in a screening of the film at the school or at TIFF. Professional learning opportunities include teaching about film, introducing students to filmmaking and integrating critical film viewing into classroom discussion.|
|University of Toronto||Concussion Care||This program offers specialized medical and allied health care of concussions to a select number of referred secondary school students. Coordinator presents program criteria and overview, pathway for support and program activities.
The cornerstone of the management of concussion is the early intervention and gradual progression of stimulation or stressors that may, if over-exposed, disrupt natural recovery and cause relapse or exacerbation of symptoms. Historically, this aspect of care has focused on gradual progression of physical activity (return-to-play), but in recent years, the application of these principles in learning environments (return-to-learn) has received increasing attention. Academic student life is comprised of subtle and complex stressors and the interaction of this environment and how stressors impact the student recovering from a concussion are poorly understood.

Facilitated by professional musicians and composers, students have an opportunity to use new technologies, found sounds and soundwalks to create original works and potentially have the opportunity to hear their compositions performed by a professional ensemble. Performances by the ensemble are available to all students. Workshops for students to enhance their learning include: instrumental improvisation technique, exploring contemporary Canadian repertoire, exploring contemporary performance techniques for composing, performance by Continuum core ensemble, facilitation in co-composition with a composer. Schools can choose to bring in an artist, composer or host a performance by the core ensemble or any combination thereof.|

Combining an enhanced knowledge of Interior Design, with developing creative skill through a practical and hands-on exercise, this partnership programming is delivered in a singular presentation or in a three-part workshop series that allows students more time with Designers as they complete and share the projects that emerge from this new knowledge and skill-development opportunity. The series is ideal for grades 11 or 12 arts students who already have an understanding of drawing and perspective.
|In The Mix||Music & Dance Video Creations||This project-based workshop combines Hip Hop dance with an introduction to creating a dance music video using a tablet. The facilitator begins by teaching basic choreographic dance sequences that explore rhythm, physicality and movement so students can then work in small groups to create their own dance routine. Next, the facilitator teaches the music video production process which includes how to film, record, edit and splice. Using the In The Mix music-video app, students film and edit their ensemble dance routines to create their individual dance music video. This workshop emphasizes collaboration, team work and decision-making skills through the entire project. |
|Joan Barrington||Light Hearts-Healing Play||This resiliency workshop teaches techniques through 'clowning' to reduce students' stress and nurture well-being. Students are engaged in the program through improvisation activities i.e. role playing, theatre games in group settings, storytelling, and confidence-building activities. These exercises encourage and help develop a positive image of themselves, leading towards better relationships with their peers and the greater community. The workshop sessions are customized in order to fit the particular needs of students and educational criteria.
|University of Toronto||Professional Learning on Math Anxiety: Relationships Between Emotion and Cognition ||This seminar helps teachers develop an understanding of the presentation of math anxiety and to help students who experience intense emotions during mathematics. Graduate post-secondary students from University of Toronto lead a half day presentation on the causes of math anxiety, how to improve performance in mathematics specifically in students who are vulnerable to experiencing intense emotions and anxiety, and strategies to reduce teachers’ anxiety in mathematics. Teachers learn strategies and learning tools to use in the classroom to decrease students’ anxiety and benefit students’ performance in mathematics. Follow-up with staff occurs to review the impact of practice and how staff continue to support students.|
|Canadian Roots Exchange||Everyday Reconciliation and Solidarity ||This session is a hands-on session that will present groups with different calls to action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) report that was released in the summer of 2015. To start, facilitators will provide a brief presentation of what the TRC is and its implications on the relationships with Indigenous peoples and settlers. The class will be divided into smaller groups, who will then be provided with one of the 94 calls to action published by the TRC. Each call to action comes with a set of questions to get youth thinking about how they can implement the findings of the report and how we can all be in solidarity with Indigenous peoples. Groups will brainstorm on chart paper, and then report back to the larger group. After presenting, each group will be provided with another call to action and begin the process of thinking about how we can implement those actions into our schools, communities and in everyday life.
Our sessions are always co-facilitated by Indigenous and non-Indigenous facilitators. We emphasize this shared model of leadership and experiential education in order to provide holistic approaches and diverse perspectives on issues that impact our communities. In all of our activities, we believe that dialogue and cultural representation is necessary to fostering understanding and reconciliation.|
