Naomi ChorneyArt-To-GoArt-To-Go features fun and dynamic, curriculum-based workshops in Visual Arts, Ceramics and Dance in English or French by a bilingual, multi-disciplinary artist and community arts facilitator. Visual arts workshops feature printmaking, relief printmaking, relief painting and paper making. Students are guided and coached through a design project, technique and process to create an individual art piece. Ceramic workshops feature air-dry clay projects from decorative animals, character faces and gargoyles to mask-making and birchbark canoes. Air-dry clay projects include slab, coil and pinchpot-making techniques as well as a brief history of clay use. Dance workshops include Hip Hop, Dance Fusion and Creative Movement and Storytelling. Students engage with choreography and principles of dance while learning a routine for a group performance. Serving: Kindergarten - Grade 8
Arts ExpressArts Express Arts Express offers arts programming for kindergarten - grade 8 students in a variety of ways: drama and dance workshops, the T.A.S.A.M. "Tackling Anxiety and Stress through Arts and Mindfulness” program which focuses on the arts and mental health and wellness; and The Literacy Storytelling series. Drama and dance curriculum based workshops include the following topics Shakespeare, poetry, character creation, improv, tableau, creative movement, hip hop and jazz. The T.A.S.A.M. program, uses our effective Creative Arts education approach, in conjunction with an expert in child development, to introduce strategies and tools that can alleviate everyday anxieties. The Literacy Storytelling series promotes literacy skills while helping to start the conversation about socially complex topics including bullying, inclusion, mindfulness, fair play, and racism. The Arts Access FundArts Access In The SchoolsThese free arts-focused workshops are facilitated by professional artists in a variety of disciplines in select schools. Students participate in various activities that include mixed media, photography, sculpture, architecture, performing arts and creative movement. Workshops integrate cross-curricular subjects such as media literacy, language, social studies, science and math; and creativity and self-expression through creative expression. Students develop a greater understanding of the world around them through their own creativity. Consultation with teachers prior to sessions occur to ensure enhancement to the curriculum. Full Circle - Art Therapy CentreArtful Wellbeing Sessions are designed to support the mental health well-being of students, staff, and parents/caregivers, through expressive arts and mindfulness. Delivered by professional art therapists who are also registered psychotherapists, workshops help participants externalize and organize their thoughts and feelings through art; thoughts and feeling that may otherwise be difficult to articulate. Sessions address common psychosocial struggles through creative ways. They address mental health topics such as self-care practice, stress relief, relationships & boundaries, and managing expectations. These workshops enhance communication and self-expression, self-discovery and problem-solving. As a Black visual communicator, graphic designer and painter, Mark is committed to educating, empowering and uniting through art. Students enhance their understanding of the deconstruction of symbols within media arts and developing advanced skills in storytelling. Students create their own artwork while thinking about themselves and their intersectional identities. Culminating projects may be murals, apparel, graphic design and/or products. Toronto Art Therapy InstituteArt Therapist Practicum Field PlacementsThis program provides field placement opportunities for graduate students in Art Therapy. Field placement students collaborate with TDSB staff to enhance their understanding of curriculum; to plan and implement activities for students; and to foster positive relationships with students, staff and parents. Art Therapist Practicum graduate students may support referred TDSB students in any of the following activities: enhance communication and self-expression, self-discovery, and problem solving; encourage development of healthy coping strategies in working through specific issues, such as depression & anxiety, addictions, grief/loss, or trauma; help children relieve stress, increase emotional literacy and awareness of self, and develop healthy and effective coping skills. Using imagery, colour and shapes; thoughts and feelings can be expressed that may be otherwise difficult for children to articulate.
Fusion Artz CaféArt Clay Ceramic MetamorphosisProject-based learning approach using art, clay or ceramics to enhance science, social studies and language subjects for students in Grades 1 - 8. Themes include Animal Life Cycles, Solar System, Habitats & Communities, Body Systems. Whilst working on their art project, students are encouraged to think critically and develop their art-making skills. In these in-person or virtual sessions, students learn different art processes of using clay including clay techniques, painting and glazing. Students sketch, form and mould their project and facilitators take the projects to be fired and returned the following week for students to paint and finish. Through this creative process, students learn to interpret, organize, and apply newly learned information in a creative and engaging way.
Foresight Partners Inc.Anti-Vaping PresentationThis interactive presentation educates students about the harmful risks and consequences with vaping that is optimistic, informative and provocative. Session challenges students to make better choices and to steer in a positive direction for their future selves to see. Presentation covers risks, facts, prevention, dealing with peer pressure and stressors that lead one to vaping. Professional Support Staff are informed and can support with customization of the presentation. Suitable: Grades 6-12 .
Magic Live Inc. Anti-Bullying Magic Show This one-hour professional magic show is an assembly for elementary students which embeds an anti-bullying message and shares ways students can help each other. The presentation is designed to enhance student engagement and positive school climate. Professional magician/illusionist Coby also talks about his personal story of being bullied as a child and how magic helped him overcome bullying. Students will be engaged in discussion and presentation on identifying bullying, verbal, physical, social, and cyber bullying, while providing clear and practical anti-bullying strategies. Tadiem Inc.An Introduction to Advertising, Design and PRThis presentation for secondary students, delivered by industry professionals, looks at the roles within advertising, public relations and design, and the work that goes into developing a public campaign. Facilitators bring case studies to show students the degree to which advertising and PR campaigns can affect trends and public discourse while highlighting the jobs that make it all happen. Content also includes why these careers are worth pursuing, an overview of various roles and how best to get started. This presentation complements the Marketing courses of the Business Studies curriculum and provides students an opportunity to learn and explore this industry.
Oshoiseh Indigenous African Educational and Cultural Consulting ServicesAn African Indigenous Education on Pre-Colonial AfricaThrough the lens of African Indigenous ways of learning, this program equips students with the knowledge and skills to understand the origins and reasons of anti-Black racism and racism as documented by African Indigenous Peoples over 2000 years ago. It will inform learners of the perspectives of their African Indigenous Ancestors about their Black racial identity and history outside what is found in Western academia. Using an inquiry-based approach, students will engage with material based on their topic of interest regarding precolonial Africa and its implications for the global world and our lives today. Dwayne MorganAmplifying Student VoiceIn his youth, Dwayne Morgan found his voice, and has used it to carve out a life filled with unique experiences. In these motivational sessions, he shares the blueprint for creating a life built around our passions, based in love for self and others. Fused with spoken word poetry, Morgan weaves an inspirational and attainable story; challenges new thinking related to students' use of social media; and evokes engagement in students' sense of self and ability to develop their creative writing skills as an expression of their own voice and their own story. Sessions include spoken word performance and an introduction to poetry slams, with a passion for encouraging Black Student Achievement. Serving: Grades 4 - 12
Hands on Exotics Inc.Amazing Living World of BirdsThis highly interactive presentation takes students on an avian tour around the world using a variety of species of birds. By being presented with multiple species of birds up close and personal, students hold, pet, feed and observe the animals' behaviours and traits. Trained facilitators guide students through the inquiry process to come to conclusions themselves about diet and habitat by examining the different beak shapes, toe formations, feathers, colours and size. In addition, students learn about native species of birds including every day good habits they can follow to be good neighbours to our wildlife, how to help with backyard conservation as well as discuss the consequences of being responsible agents to our natural resources. ALPHA EducationALPHA ProjectALPHA engages staff and students of diverse backgrounds to foster awareness of an often overlooked aspect of WWII history, in the interest of furthering the values of justice, peace, and reconciliation, both for survivors of the past and for those who shape the historical narratives of the present and future. Curriculum resources, in-school workshops, international guest speakers, professional learning sessions, assembly presentations; and conferences are all available to enhance understanding and critical analysis of the events of WWII in Asia. Staff and students are inspired to make connections between these important historical events and the atrocities of war that continue in the present. Through experiential learning, students are enabled to connect what they learn in classrooms with local, Asian, and world events as contexts for their application of what they know, do, and value. It is also learning that is personal and creative as students engage in interdisciplinary historical inquiry on the complexities of war, security, power, and identity to understand how our world works today as part of being responsible citizens who advocate for peace and humanity over violence and war.

New Tradition MusicAfro-Indigenous Colombian DrummingStudents engage in highly interactive workshops and performance to promote cross-cultural understanding of Afro-Indigenous Colombian music. Facilitators demonstrate rhythms and sounds using a variety of different percussion instruments, narrate the history of the traditional musical style Música de Gaita and share how the music has evolved into present day. Workshops with Ruben “Beny” Esguerra develop students’ drumming technique, sound development, communication skills and work on repertoire as an ensemble. Performances by New Tradition Music ensemble demonstrate the evolution of the traditional styles of Latin American music into today’s musical context including fusing elements of Hip Hop urban culture, beat boxing, body percussion, break dancing and spoken word. Coco CollectiveAfro-Caribbean Art ExperienceA group of intergenerational artists deliver a series of culturally-relevant arts workshops with specialty in African and Caribbean arts to elementary students, kindergarten - Grade 8. Sessions offered in-person or virtually. Students gain a cultural education from some areas in the African diaspora, positive identity formation, leadership skills using the arts (dance, visual arts, music, storytelling), performance expression and intercultural understanding. Six workshops are offered with two facilitators: African/Caribbean Dance, Percussion from African/Caribbean, Visuals Arts – Trinidad, Visual Arts – African/Caribbean agriculture, Visual Arts/Storytelling and Storytelling Through Performance.
Coco CollectiveAfricanist Dance: Then and NowThis hands-on dance series ties history, politics and socio-cultural realities to the rhythm and movements of dance genres across African and Caribbean communities for grades 4-12. Sessions are offered in-person or virtually. Through dance languages from the West African region, Caribbean and North America, students learn dance narratives, musicality and dance functions tied to cultural histories and evolution. This culturally-responsive dance program is a safe space for students to engage in contemporary dialogue on misconceptions, stereotypes, share positive cultural identity, and acquire understandings and of structure and functions of some diasporic dances rooted in Sub-Saharan West African, Ghanaian, Trinidadian and Jamaican communities. Schools may choose two workshops from the following genres: traditional African, Kpanlogo, Dancehall, Soca, Afrobeats and Afro-Dancehall.
Alpha Rhythm RootsAfrican Musical JourneyGuinean music, dance, traditions and culture are explored in these African drum circle and dance sessions. Presentations discuss the Guinean percussion orchestra, manufacturing and origins of instruments and history alongside live demonstrations of the instruments played in Western Africa. Performances bring history alive through full traditional outfits, drumming and dancing to the entire school. Workshops provide students the opportunity to participate in collective drumming and dance that develop teamwork, memorization, hand coordination and creativity. Students learn a full orchestra rhythm and/or choreographed dance routine. All sessions are available in English and French, year-round, and professional learning may be available to staff. Drums Et AlAfrican Drumming, Dance, and StorytellingThe themes of leadership, character development and connection with those around us are explored in these interactive African drumming, dance and storytelling presentation and workshops. African philosophy – Ubuntu – an understanding of ourselves in relation with the world are underpinned in the presentations which are brought to life using songs, music, chants, drumming and story-telling. Workshops provide opportunities for students to further enhance the following skills: hand-drumming technique, West-African dance fundamentals, listening, reflecting and responding, and creating and performing. Presentations are suitable for Black History Month and professional development in drumming may be available.
Afiwi Groove SchoolAfrican Dance and Drum ProgramIn-person or virtual performances and workshops instill an appreciation for self-expression and self-discovery through African-Caribbean dance and drumming to elementary students. Afiwi comes from the Jamaican Patois dialect which loosely means “for us; for everyone.” Workshops include introduction to djembe drumming, West African/Afro Beats Dance (African Hip Hop), and Afro-Fitness. Dance and drum workshops are led by dynamic and talented performers with lived experience and expertise in the cultures of Africa and the places it has influenced. Artists are dedicated to sharing and celebrating the unique contributions of African-rooted cultures. Through rhythmic beats and movements, children are connected to another world full of sensory experiences that awaken their imagination. Performances are available but not limited to Black History Month.
EMG Education CompanyAfrican Canadian History TheatreEMG Education offers original 45-minute theatrical productions on Canadian Stories with a focus on African Canadian Change Makers who have shaped the fabric of this nation. Using multimedia , the performance weaves contemporary issues and reinforces messages of diversity, inclusion and that one person can make a difference, all within the context of Canadian history. Students take part in wall climbing and vertical challenges, the Gorilla Gym individual swinging challenge, Ascending Lines, and challenges such as the Commando Course, Cable Ride and Obstacle Courses. Students are separated into groups by their age and complete age-appropriate activities. The initiative offers programs that engage students of all ages and abilities in climbing and ropes course activities in school gyms. Junglesport's staff supervises the activities. Various sessions and downloadable tutorials on financial literacy are available with an emphasis on personal tax and business plan development. Sessions on Canadian Income Tax include “How To” demonstrations and materials to provide a foundational level of tax understanding. Sessions on how to apply for the Disability Tax Credit for individuals with learning disabilities are available for students and parents to learn more about the complexity in applying and the path to getting approved. Sessions on Business Plan development in a modern-day context include an emphasis on automation tools. StopGap FoundationAccessibility & Inclusion: Building AwarenessThis presentation raises awareness about physical disability, accessibility and inclusion. In this in-person or virtual session, Luke Anderson shares how one moment in time changes his life forever and how he finds himself living in a world not well designed for someone in a wheelchair. He explains his personal experiences, challenges he faces and how he overcomes. Students learn about barriers that people with disabilities may face, the importance of a barrier-free and inclusive community, as well as empowering language when referring to people with disabilities. York UniversityAboriginal People, Identity and Education This advanced credit experience includes both university and secondary school courses that provide students with the opportunity to learn from Aboriginal authors, filmmakers, and artists who are telling their own stories. What does it mean to be an Aboriginal/Indigenous person in Canada? What does it mean to be an Aboriginal person living in an urban environment like Toronto? The dual course includes reading books, watching films, and going to art galleries. Students investigate and develop their own responses to questions of identity and Aboriginality. They explore Aboriginal perspectives of "identify", "history", "literature", and "traditions"; and, allows them to develop their own understanding of Aboriginal worldviews. Students register with TDSB Continuing Education for either (NDA3M) Current Aboriginal Issues in Canada or (NDW4M) Issues of Indigenous Peoples in a Global Context. Delivered in person or virtually. Sessions provide a unique interactive experience to increase awareness of inclusive participation, adapted games and sport activities for everyBODY. Sessions offered support physical and social inclusion learning to engage, excite and empower students to play, participate and/or compete in accessible and inclusive initiatives together. The flight Power Foundation7 Pillars of LeadershipA workshop series demonstrating seven key skills/habits that establish a growth mindset and contribute toward leadership development and success for students in Grades 6-12. Areas of focus include responsibility, goal-setting, mobilizing change, changing thought patterns, how to make difficult decisions, communication and teamwork. These activity-based workshops engage students to expand their perspectives. Flight Power facilitators use meaningful content and current day examples to show students how to apply these skills in their lives.
CANVAS Arts Action Programs2SLGBTQ+ Inclusion and Consent WorkshopsInteractive, arts-based workshops on 2SLGBTQ+ inclusion, consent, and gender equity engage an anti-oppression framework to support students in creating safer, more inclusive communities. Four series are available: “Speak Out” enhances students’ understanding about LGBTQ2S+ identities, how to be an ally, and ways to challenge homophobic and transphobic bullying. “The C-Word” : prepares students for real-life social situations; equipped with tools to enact consent, develop consensual relationships, recognize sexual pressures, challenge social expectations, and support survivors of assault. “RelateABILITY” : for students with developmental disabilities, this series engages arts-based education and role play to educate on consent, communication, and creating safe, positive relationships. Urban Minds Planning and Design Studio1UP Youth City Builders ProgramA youth leadership program that educates and empowers secondary students to become urban changemakers by giving them the skills to contribute to making our cities more livable, equitable and sustainable. Students learn about city building, urban planning, architecture and gain practical skills in civic leadership. Workshops lead students to identify urban issues/challenges and using design jam process to think of possible solutions. Activities may include a neighbourhood walk. Program is suitable for Grades 9-12 Geography or Civics classes.
180 Change Street180 Change StreetThis program engages referred youth in a targeted intervention strategy designed to inspire positive and comprehensive change. Working with TDSB Caring & Safe Schools, these motivational and educational sessions include one-on-one mentoring, life coaching and training. Sessions cover topics such as grief, trauma, culturally-relevant mental health and well being, self-awareness, conflict resolution, critical thinking skills, culturally-responsive wrap-around services. Emerging from behind the walls of Canada's prison system, this program is built on its "E to the Power of 5 (E5)" framework and "PURPLE" life-skills acronym, helping youth to turn the stumbling blocks of life into the stepping stones of success. Created for the streets, by the streets, referred students are engaged in examining street culture through a comprehensive lens. The program has a history of successfully keeping participants from returning to or staying out of the justice system. Many referred youth have completed their education and graduated or found employment. Serving: Grades 7 - 12
